  • Each group is to do some sort of presentation – we would like to sing the song we learned last week but also add some “scenery” so that we are relating the song to our international friendship with Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world.
  • This week we will just work on the song, and over the next few weeks we will practice and make some scenery for our presentation.

Discussion

  • Introduce Mexico and Our Cabaña
  • There are 145 countries that are part of WAGGGS, but only four of them have world centres. One world centre is Our Cabaña in Mexico.
  • Every world centre has activities that are related to the culture of the country they are in.
  • Our Cabaña was officially opened in July of 1957.
  • It can accommodate 84 participants, and is the largest of the world centres.
  • Art, color, and flowers are everywhere.
  • The weather is wonderful, with year round temperatures from 10C to 27C
  • Our Cabaña is itself a spot of beauty. The grounds, enclosed by a high stone wall that extends around the entire property, is typical of many homes in Mexico.
  • As you step in through the high blue doors embossed with the gold World Association logo, you enter a lush green oasis that provides a welcome respite from the brown, bare terrain during the dry season. Flowers are everywhere; jacaranda, copa de oro, bougainvillea, and llamarada bloom in profusions of red, orange, pink, and gold. There are rose gardens, stately poinsettias, cactus gardens, and flowering trees.
  • Around the property are eight buildings with low slanting roofs, many large windows, and volcanic stone
  • Walkways connect the buildings and wind around gardens, fountains, and a beautiful swimming pool. As you float on your back in the pool under a blue, cloudless sky, you can see in the distance the snow-capped peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl-- the volcanoes outside Mexico City.

Craft

  • Guatamalen Worry Dolls (links to an external website)
  • Before going to bed each night, the children of Guatemala, the country immediately south of Mexico, tell their troubles and worries to tiny dolls made of colourful threads - one doll for each worry. The dolls are then placed under their pillow, and, while asleep, the dolls solve all of the problems!
