Discussion

  • Introduce India and Sangam World Centre
  • Sangam is located in the city of Pune in India. It is on the west side of the country. (show map)
  • It was built in 1964 and officially opened by Lady Baden Powell in 1966.
  • The building is of warm, red brick with white trim, white pillars and an arched roof. The buildings surround an inner courtyard with swaying trees and an inviting swimming pool. The gardens, flowers and trees help to give Sangam an atmosphere of cool tranquility. The seven acres of land stretch through the shady campsite, past the flagpole down to the banks of the gently-flowing Mula River.
  • The weather in Pune is warm to hot all year round, making the cool peaceful surroundings of Sangam a welcome relief.
  • In Sanskrit, the word "Sangam" describes a place where three rivers meet. It also means "coming together" and at Sangam Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from many nations can come together to experience international living at its best and to forge lasting friendships.
  • Almost everywhere in India you will find bright colours. Embroidery, fabric, saris, in bright colour flourish in this exciting country.

Discussion

  • Reminder about CWFF
  • Just like our song says “We can make a difference”. One way to make a difference is to collect money for the Canadian World Friendship Fund which will help other girls in other countries. This year, Girl Guides of Canada will designate Canadian World Friendship Fund donations to provide mutual aid to assist the people devastated by the recent disasters in Queensland Australia, Brazil, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
  • Our goal is to collect at least $5 per member to donate to CWFF.
  • To help us collect our CWFF money, we are going to make a “treasure box” – we will collect our CWFF “treasure money” in it this month, then next month, after you hand your money in, you get to keep your box for other special treasures.

  • India is home to more than half of all of Asia’s wild elephants.
  • The elephant is very important to Indian life. Elephants are closely associated with their religious and cultural heritage; they have played an important role in the country's history and remain revered today. An India without elephants is simply unimaginable.
  • It seems appropriate to sing THIS song from our Music Challenge:
